James Erwin

James Shrewsbury Erwin (born November 27, 1920 in New York City , New York , † July 14, 2005 in York , Maine ) was an American lawyer and politician who was Maine Attorney General from 1967 to 1971 .

Life

James Erwin was born in New York to James R. Erwin and Elizabeth Davidson. In 1942 he graduated from Dartmouth College . During World War II he was used in North Africa, Italy and France. He was honorably discharged from service in 1946.

He graduated from Columbia University Law School, where he graduated in 1949. He then moved to York and opened a law firm there. He was President of the Maine Bar Association and was a member of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court's Committee on Judicial Disability and Responsibility .

As a member of the Republican Party , he was a member of the Maine House of Representatives from 1965 to 1966, a member of the Maine Senate from 1961 to 1962, and Maine Attorney General from 1967 to 1971. He was chairman of the delegates to the Republican National Convention in 1968, and was the Republican candidate for governor of Maine in 1970 and 1974 .

He campaigned for the forests of Main and was patron of the Baxter State Park Authority during his time as Attorney General. He also supported York Hospital, which was originally housed in his grandmother's house. He served on the Board of Trustees from 1952 to 1966 and from 1975 to 1990. He was also on the board of the University of Maine , he was a trustee of the York School District, chairman of the York County Chapter of the American Red Cross and other honorary offices, he was a member of the First Parish Church. Also a Freemason and belonged to the Knights Templar, York County Shrine Club, Maine Royal Arch Chapter and Kora Temple AAONMS.

From Columbia University Law School he received in 1970 the award "Progress with Promise".

James Erwin married Charlotte Anne Ruprecht in 1947. They had four children. Erwin died on July 14, 2005 in York, Maine.
