Guy H. Sturgis

Guy H. Sturgis (born March 3, 1877 in New Gloucester , Maine , † January 18, 1951 ) was an American judge and politician who was Maine Attorney General from 1917 to 1920 .

Life

Guy Hayden Sturgis was born in New Gloucester to John I. Sturgis and Myra Hayden. He attended schools in New Gloucester and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1898. He graduated from Columbia University Law School in 1899. He then went on to work for Thomas B. Reed's law firm.

After his admission to the bar, he opened a law firm in Portland . As a member of the Republican Party , he was a member of the Republican State Committee. Maine Attorney General from 1917 to 1920.

By Governor Percival Proctor Baxter Sturgis was appointed on August 14, 1923 as Associate Judge of the Supreme Judicial Court. On August 8, 1940, he was appointed presiding judge by Governor Lewis O. Barrows . He held this office until his retirement on March 1, 1949. Sturgis received an honorary doctorate from Bowdoin College.

Sturgis was a member of various organizations in Portland and was also a Freemason . He was a member of the Knights of Pythias , the Woodfords Club and the Lincoln Club of Portland.

Guy H. Sturgis married Edna L. Bailey in his first marriage. They had two children. After her death in 1907, he married Adelaide V. Sweeney in 1909. There were four other children from this marriage. He died on January 18, 1951.
