Henry B. Cleaves (born February 6, 1840 in Bridgton , Cumberland County , Maine , † June 22, 1912 ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Maine from 1893 to 1897 .

Early years

Cleaves attended local schools in his homeland. During the civil war he rose in the Union Army from simple soldier to lieutenant . After the war, Cleaves studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1868. He then began working in this profession in Portland . Between 1876 and 1877, Republican Cleaves was a member of the House of Representatives from Maine . From 1877 to 1879 he was an attorney for the City of Portland and then from 1880 to 1885 Attorney General of Maine. In 1892 he was elected as his party's candidate for the new governor.

Governor of Maine

Cleaves took office on January 4, 1893. After re-election in 1894, he was able to exercise it until January 2, 1897. His tenure was overshadowed by an economic crisis that erupted in 1893, which struck not just Maine but the entire United States, and was slow to recover from. As a member of the Republican Party, Cleaves supported William McKinley's election campaign in 1896 . After the end of his governorship, Cleaves retired into private life.
