Diaphanes

Diaphanes is a Swiss publisher based in Zurich. The focus of the publishing activities are literature, philosophy, humanities and art; among the published books there are numerous translations. Michael Heitz is the Chairman of the Board of Directors. Diaphanes is not a member of the Swiss Booksellers and Publishers Association .

Publishing history

Diaphanes was founded in 2001 by Michael Heitz and has since established itself as an independent publisher in the fields of contemporary philosophy, theory, art and cultural studies and media theory. The translation of contemporary philosophers such as Alain Badiou , Jean-Luc Nancy , Jacques Rancière , Louis Marin and Giorgio Agamben contributed in particular .

In 2008 a literature program with selected prose was launched, including Tom McCarthy's 8 1/2 million , the prose of the theater maker and co-founder of the performance group Forced Entertainment Tim Etchells and Joseph Mitchell's New York reports from the 1930s to 1950s in German . 2012 the novel was secretly secretly me forget by Angelika Meier for the longlist for the German Book Prize nomination.

The journal for media studies (ZfM) was published by Diaphanes until 2017 , which is supported and editorially designed by the Society for Media Studies . Since the publication of issue 17 (autumn 2017), the journal for media studies has been published by Bielefeld's Transcript Verlag .

The program includes contemporary philosophy, political theory, art theory, the history of science, cultural and media studies as well as selected essay and literary titles. It is essentially set up in rows.

The literature program includes new discoveries and rediscoveries from contemporary German and international literature in bound editions.

In a series of brochures, Diaphanes also publishes literary and essayistic texts that are to be made permanently available, including a new edition of the translation by Georges Perecs W or the childhood memories of Eugen Helmlé .

In the Transpositions series , Diaphanes publishes first translations by contemporary international philosophers, mainly from French-speaking countries, but also from Italian and English. These include Alain Badiou , Jean-Luc Nancy , Jacques Rancière , Giorgio Agamben , Judith Butler , Bernard Stiegler , Simon Critchley and Stanley Cavell .

The Quadro series is devoted to questions of art and image theory. Authors of this series are e.g. B. Georges Didi-Huberman , Hubert Damisch , Jean-Luc Godard and Rosalind Krauss .

The series minima oeconomica , launched in 2011, serves to analyze and criticize the economy and is edited by Joseph Vogl . In addition to basic texts by the US economist Hyman P. Minsky, two titles by the Swiss economist Christian Marazzi have been published here.

Since 2012, a series of essays on well-known television series such as The Wire and The Sopranos has been published under the title Booklet .

Since the beginning of 2014 the publisher has published a series entitled Platon & Co - Philosophy for Young Readers . The series has its own website.

In 2017, the publisher began publishing the Diaphanes magazine quarterly.
