Tim Etchells (* 1962 ) is an English playwright and performer , director , writer and light artist .

Live and act

He is known to a wide audience primarily through his work with the performance group Forced Entertainment , which he helped found in 1984 . This became one of the most influential theater projects in the last few decades. With and for Forced Entertainment he has designed and implemented dozens of performance projects, often as an actor on the stage, which were very well received by critics and audiences. Etchell's work with Forced Entertainment has been presented at many important festivals and theaters around the world. Many of the performances deal with the mechanisms of theatrical performance practice, with conventions and expectations of the audience when attending a theater event. Forced entertainment had an immense influence on the development of a genuinely British avant-garde style in the performance sector, and their work is now part of the canon of drama and performance schools.

Outside of Forced Entertainment , Etchells developed his own forms of artistic expression: as a writer, in his collaboration with the photographer Hugo Glendinning on photo projects, as a neon and video artist and through cooperation with performers worldwide (e.g. Franko B and Vlatka Horvat ). Etchells developed two light objects in 2012 for the Mousonturm artist house in Frankfurt am Main . On the outside of the house he put the sentence the future will be confusing in colored neon letters , in the foyer he scattered this statement in the same letters on a large inner wall to form an anagram . Among other things, he wrote the piece "That Night Follows Day" (That night comes after the day. German by Astrid Sommer). It is aimed at adults, but should only be played by children.

Tim Etchells lives in Sheffield, Northern England, and New York .
