The Künstlerhaus Mousonturm is a free theater in Frankfurt am Main . The theater is run by the municipal Künstlerhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt GmbH .

history

In 1798 the Berlin resident August Friedrich Mouson founded a soap and perfume factory in the Breiten Gasse. In 1881 the factory was relocated to Ostend , which was still underdeveloped at the time. From 1923 to 1926, new factories were built on the factory premises, including the 33-meter-high Mousonturm , built according to a design by Gärtner and Wollmann . The Mousonturm is considered to be the first skyscraper in Frankfurt. The best-known product of the Mouson company was Mouson cream, developed after the First World War - the cream with a deep effect . The clinker building in the Expressionist style with jagged and triangular ornaments is now a listed building.

After a checkered history, the Mouson soap factory was sold in 1972. By 1976 the factory buildings were demolished except for the Mousonturm.

After the renovation of the former soap and perfume factory and a new building of the theater hall, the theater opened on December 29, 1988 in Frankfurt's Waldschmidtstrasse as a production facility and venue for independent projects. The initiator was Hilmar Hoffmann , the head of the Frankfurt cultural department , and Dieter Buroch , who, beginning with the nine-day festival of the Omnibus group in 1977, had also done all the preliminary planning for this “culture factory”. After 23 years of service, Buroch was retired in December 2011. From 2012 these tasks were taken over by Niels Ewerbeck (1962–2012), who had previously headed the Theaterhaus Gessnerallee in Zurich. In the first half of 2012 the house was completely rebuilt and the theater hall gutted. The reopening took place on September 6, 2012 with the performance of Before Your Very Eyes by Gob Squad . After Ewerbeck's death, the house was initially managed on a provisional basis. From August 1, 2013 Matthias Pees was appointed artistic director and managing director.

Cultural center

The Mousonturm's program ranges from dance and theater to music, performance , visual arts , media art , literature , film , radio plays and club art .

The house is part of an informal network of institutionalized and internationally oriented independent theaters in Germany, including Kampnagel in Hamburg, the Sophiensaele and the Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin. The house is the site of the biennial International Summer Academy, an important forum for European performance art . In 1991 Dieter Buroch founded the SOAP Dance Theater , which was headed by the Portuguese choreographer Rui Horta and which was closed in 1998 after numerous productions and successful guest performances due to a lack of funds. Since 2010 the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm has again had a dance company with Kidd Pivot Frankfurt RM under the choreographer Crystal Pite . With the premiere of Dark Matters in the Mousonturm in May of the same year, Crystal Pite began a tour of Europe with her new troupe. Her piece The You Show followed in spring 2011 at Mousonturm and her current choreography with The Tempest Replica in October 2011 . The Mousonturm is one with the houses Kampnagel, HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Hellerau - European Center for the Arts , FFT Dusseldorf and the Dance House NRW for Alliance international production houses .

In 1999 the Künstlerhaus was awarded the Binding Culture Prize.

The Hessian Literature Forum in Mousonturm eV, founded in 1985 and directed by Björn Jager, is also located in the house
