history

The workshop

The origin of the Tanzhaus NRW lies in 1973 u. a. Urwerkstatt culture initiative founded by the paper merchant Uli Hoffmann on the site of the former machine factory Haniel & Lueg (Grafenberger Allee). In 1978 the non-profit association “The workshop for dance, theater, painting, work and design” was created. The initiative had set itself the goal of promoting creativity and enabling encounters between artists and the population. In 1979 the house received grants from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for the first time. The Grafenberger Allee era ended on March 29, 1980 with the "excavator clearance party" and the move to Börnestrasse took place. In the early 1980s, the workshop festivals made a wider public aware of the work of the association. In 1987 the "Rheinische Tanz- und Theatererschule" was founded in cooperation with the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf . The workshop increasingly developed into a meeting place for international artists. Guests were u. a. Oskar Pastior , Allen Ginsberg and Whoopi Goldberg . Due to excessive rent demands, the workshop left its house on Börnestrasse in 1998 and looked for a new place of work.

The Tanzhaus NRW

In 1998 the workshop moved into an old tram depot, rebuilt on Erkrather Straße in the Flingern- Süd district of Düsseldorf and renamed itself the Tanzhaus NRW. The house now has an area of around 4,000 square meters with two stages, eight dance studios, production rooms and a bistro.

Tanzhaus NRW is responsible for projects such as Take-Off: Young Dance , which is dedicated to sustainable improvements in structures for dance art for and with children and young people, as well as the International Dance Artist Service (iDAS) , the choreographers and companies from North Rhine-Westphalia ( NRW) supported in the development and marketing of productions. Tanzhaus NRW is deepening its diverse skills and contacts in a large number of international networks such as the EU projects European Dancehouse Network (EDN) and Shifting Realities , which is funded by the Federal Cultural Foundation .

After 35 years, Bertram Müller, long-time director of Tanzhaus NRW, retired at the end of 2013. He received u. a. in the 1990s the State Order Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the then French Minister of Culture Jack Lang and in 2014 the German Dance Prize for his life's work, the Tanzhaus NRW. Since the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Bettina Masuch, who previously worked as a curator at Hebbel am Ufer and at the Tanz im August festival in Berlin and as director of the Springdance Festival in Utrecht , has been the new director of Tanzhaus NRW. Tanzhaus NRW belongs to the alliance of international production houses .

The range includes contemporary dance in all its varieties, u. a. in international guest performances and festivals (e.g. Temps d'Images ) as well as in thematically motivated series and experimental formats. Three selected resident artists regularly show their work on stage and lead workshops in the academy area. With Alexandra Waierstall from Düsseldorf, Sebastian Matthias from Berlin and Jan Martens from Antwerp, Tanzhaus NRW will bind three very different artists to the house until 2016.

In June 2017, Claire Cunningham, Ligia Lewis and Choy Ka Fai, the second generation of Factory Artists, started their work at Tanzhaus NRW. The third generation of artists resident from 2020 to 2022 have their work focus in North Rhine-Westphalia. These are Reut Shemech, Alfredo Zinola and the nutrospektif collective.
