Dance in August
Tanz im August is a festival for contemporary dance in Berlin . The festival presented today by HAU Hebbel am Ufer was founded in 1988 by Nele Hertling in what was then West Berlin . Every August , Tanz im August brings famous companies, new choreographies , aesthetics and formats from all over the world to Berlin as part of a festival lasting several weeks. The focus is also on the realization of new projects by Berlin artists, cooperation with international guests and the coproduction of world premieres and German premieres. The festival uses the three stages of HAU Hebbel am Ufer and alternating other stages throughout Berlin, including a. the Haus der Berliner Festspiele , the Sophiensæle , the Radialsystem , the Volksbühne Berlin , the German Theater Berlin , the Kindl Center for Contemporary Art or the Schaubühne on Lehniner Platz .
Is sponsored dance in August by the Capital Cultural Fund.
Virve Sutinen from Finland has been the artistic director of Tanz im August since 2014 .
Productions
The 2020 edition will take place in a different form due to the COVID-19 pandemic . Instead of the stage program, the website refers to an extended online program.
In the 31st edition of 2019, 70 performances from 31 productions were shown at eleven different venues with 160 artists from 15 countries.
Numerous audience formats are an integral part of the festival program. Since 2016, on the recommendation of the festival artists, the “Library in August” in HAU2 has made books available that have shaped their work and their world of thought.
Tanz im August has published the magazine accompanying the festival in August since 2014 .

Retrospectives since 2015
Since 2015 Tanz im August has been showing a retrospective of important living artists every two years , from which a publication on their lives and works is created.

30th anniversary
In August 2018, Tanz celebrated its 30th anniversary. In addition to the festival events, the journalist Claudia Henne was committed to processing the production history of the festival in an archive. This is now available in the Tanz im August online magazine and on the website of the same name.
