Quaestiones disputatae
The Quaestiones disputatae (QD) are a series of academic books that deal with current and controversial topics in theology across the board of theological disciplines. The series, which is published by Verlag Herder , currently comprises (as of August 2019) 301 volumes.
Program
In their introduction to the series in 1958, Karl Rahner and Heinrich Schlier described its purpose as follows: “We want to practice scientific theology as Catholic theologians. That and nothing else. It is not a school, nor are special spiritual political goals pursued in the church. "
Against the background of the neo-scholastic school theology that was prevalent at the time and was perceived as frozen, and a few years after the publication of the encyclical Humani generis (1950) Pius' XII. With their anti-modernist condemnations of nouvelle théologie they specified: "We are ... of the conviction that even after two thousand years of Christian theology, its scientific work in its core must not apply to its own history, but to its cause." It was "simply wrong" that “Theology has reached a stage of finality”, rather there are real factual questions that should be addressed in the series. This implies historical investigations necessary "for the question of the matter". This applies in particular to the reflection on the Bible, which “is always the first starting point for us in theological work”. The program of a “back to the sources” echoed here for the purpose of renewing theology was received a few years later by the Second Vatican Council .
In 1985, in view of a renewed conservative turnaround under John Paul II , the subsequent series editors, Heinrich Fries and Rudolf Schnackenburg , made this concern their own and, in the spirit of the council, also emphasized "the rightly understood aggiornamento " as the core concern of the series. “This shows itself both as the task of conveying and translating [the contents of faith] into the respective historical hour as well as the fact that as a result of new questions arising from history and the situation, theology and its cause are questioned anew and the rank of a Quaestio ... whose answer is not fixed from the start, but which is sought through disputatio ... "Today the series in this line is understood as" a forum of scientific theology ... on which the relevant questions about God and the world, the Church and the belief, people and their time are discussed without prohibition of thinking in such a way that new insights are gained and new debates are initiated. The Quaestiones disputatae are a Catholic series that is ecumenically engaged, interreligiously competent and discursively present in the secular field. "
editor
The series was founded in 1958 by Karl Rahner and Heinrich Schlier. In their successor it was edited by Heinrich Fries (1985–1994), Rudolf Schnackenburg (1985–1996), Peter Hünermann (1994–2019), Thomas Söding (since 1996) and Johanna Rahner (since 2019). The principle that a tandem of an exegete and a dogmatist (or fundamental theologian ) is responsible for the series has been maintained from the beginning until today.
