Rudolf Schnackenburg

Rudolf Schnackenburg (born January 5, 1914 in Katowice , Upper Silesia , † August 28, 2002 in Würzburg ) was a German Catholic priest and New Testament scholar . It is of Joseph Ratzinger referred to as the "most significant German-speaking Catholic exegete the second half of the 20th century".

Life

Schnackenburg spent his childhood in Liegnitz and graduated from the Johanneum grammar school there in 1932 . He then studied philosophy and theology at the Universities of Breslau and Munich. At the beginning of his studies he joined the Catholic student association WkSt.V. Guestfalia-Unitas . In Breslau he was one of Friedrich Wilhelm Maier supervised and 1937 submitted dissertation on faith in the Gospel of John in Wroclaw doctorate . In the same year he received by Adolf Cardinal Bertram , the priesthood and then worked first as a pastor in Silesia. After he was expelled there in 1946, he completed his habilitation in 1947 with the work The Salvation Event at the Baptism of the Apostle Paul with Friedrich Wilhelm Maier at the University of Munich for New Testament exegesis and became a private lecturer there in 1948, from 1952 he was associate professor for New Testament exegesis of the Philosophical-Theological University of Dillingen , 1955 full professor in Bamberg. From 1957 to 1982 he taught as a professor for the New Testament at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . Josef Blank , Anton Dauer and Gerhard Lohfink were among his Würzburg assistants . After his retirement he worked as a pastor in a nursing home and as a spiritual guide for the community of Sant'Egidio .

Scientific activity

Schnackenburg was a member of the International Theological Commission and wrote numerous books, including a commentary on the Gospel of John, and contributed to the uniform translation of the Bible . He was a member of the Ecumenical Working Group of Protestant and Catholic Theologians (ÖAK) for years and contributed to publications.
