Helmut Merklein

Helmut Merklein (born September 17, 1940 in Aub ( Lower Franconia ), † September 30, 1999 in Adendorf ) was a German Catholic theologian .

Life

After studying Catholic theology in Bamberg and Würzburg, Merklein was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD. From 1972 to 1977 he was Rudolf Schnackenburg's research assistant at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg , where he completed his habilitation in 1976 . From 1977 to 1980 he taught Biblical Sciences at the Bergische Universität / Gesamtthochschule Wuppertal . From 1980 he was professor for the New Testament at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he later became full professor for the New Testament and where he had a special friendship and working group with the Protestant New Testament scholar Erich Gräßer .

Merklein had been a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences since 1997 . As chairman of the Catholic Biblical Works and specialist advisor for the New Testament at the Lexicon for Theology and Church , he enjoyed a high reputation. During his studies in Bamberg in 1959 he became a member of the Catholic student association WKSt.V. Unitas Henritia Bamberg.

In 1999 he succumbed to severe cancer.
