Joachim Gnilka

Joachim Gnilka (born December 8, 1928 in Leobschütz , Upper Silesia Province ; † January 15, 2018 in Munich ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian with a focus on the New Testament .

Life

Joachim Gnilka studied Catholic theology , philosophy and oriental languages at the Universities of Eichstätt and Würzburg and at La Sapienza in Rome from 1947 to 1953 . In 1953 he was ordained a priest by Julius Döpfner in Würzburg. From 1953 to 1956 he was a chaplain in Würzburg and, after completing his doctoral studies in Rome in 1955, he worked with Rudolf Schnackenburg with the dissertation “Is 1 Cor 3 : 10–15 a certificate for purgatory ? An exegetical-historical study »on the Dr. theol. PhD .

In Würzburg , Gnilka completed his habilitation in 1959 with the work «The hardening of Israel. Isaias 6: 9–10 in Synoptic Theology »and then worked as a private lecturer . In 1962 he was appointed full professor for New Testament exegesis in Münster / Westphalia and worked from 1975 to 1997 as full university professor for New Testament exegesis and biblical hermeneutics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1997 he retired .

From 1973 to 1988 Gnilka was a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission and from 1986 to 1997 a member of the International Theological Commission . In 1992 he was made an honorary prelate by Pope John Paul II .

Joachim Gnilka's students include Hans-Josef Klauck , Detlev Dormeyer , Katharina D. Oppel , Thomas Schmeller and Franz Jung .

Gnilka was the author of numerous commentaries on the New Testament as well as papers on Paul and Jesus research. Important works were the commentary on the Gospel of Matthew and his book Jesus of Nazareth .
