Thomas Schmeller

Thomas Schmeller (* 1956 in Munich ) is a German Roman Catholic theologian and New Testament scholar.

Life

From the winter semester 1975/1976 to the summer semester 1981 he studied Catholic theology and Latin philology in Munich and Freiburg im Breisgau . In the summer semester of 1981 he passed the theological diploma examination at the University of Munich and in autumn 1981 the first teaching examination in Catholic theology and Latin for teaching at Bavarian grammar schools. From January 1982 to July 1985 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Biblical Exegesis, Chair for New Testament ( Joachim Gnilka ), University of Munich. After graduating as Dr. theol. In June 1985 he was on leave from October 1985 to March 1986 for a pastoral internship with research projects on liberation theology in Brazil . From August 1985 to August 1989 he was Academic Councilor a. Currently at the above-mentioned institute. From September 1989 to May 1991 he taught as Assistant Professor of New Testament Studies at the Candler School of Theology, Emory University . From September 1991 to February 1993 he had a postdoctoral fellowship from the DFG . From April 1993 to September 1993 he represented the chair for New Testament Exegesis and Biblical Theology (formerly Josef Jakob Blank ) at the Institute for Catholic Theology at Saarland University . In the summer semester of 1993 he was teaching biblical theology at the Philosophical Faculty of the TU Dresden . After the habilitation in July 1993 for New Testament exegesis at the Catholic Theol. Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich , he represented from October 1993 to November 1993 Professor of Biblical Theology at the Faculty of the Technical University of Dresden (self-advocacy). In December 1993 he was appointed the holder of this professorship and a Saxon state official. From September 1997 to March 1998 he was a visiting scholar at the Candler School of Theology, Emory University. From 1999 to 2007 he was deputy chairman of the working group of German-speaking Catholic New Testament scholars. In the summer semester of 2004 he had a teaching position at the Department of Catholic Theology at the Goethe University in Frankfurt . Since August 2004 he has held the professorship for Exegesis and Theology of the New Testament at the Catholic Theology Department in Frankfurt am Main . From 2007 to 2011 he was chairman of the working group of German-speaking Catholic New Testament scholars. From 2008 to 2010 he was Dean of Studies in the Catholic Theology Department at Goethe University. From 2008 to 2013 he was co-chair (together with Edith M. Humphrey and Reimund Bieringer ) of the Society of Biblical Literature seminar “2 Corinthians: Theology in the Making”. Since 2010 he has been deputy chairman of the Rhein-Main-Exegese meeting. From 2010 to 2012 he was dean of the Catholic Theology department at Goethe University. From 2011 to 2014 he was deputy chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Catholic Biblical Works . From 2012 to 2014 he was Vice Dean of the Catholic Theology Department at Goethe University. From 2014 to 2017 he was chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Catholic Biblical Works.

His main research interests and interests are New Testament rhetoric, contemporary history of the New Testament, and the social history of early Christianity.
