Gerhard Lohfink

Gerhard Lohfink (born August 29, 1934 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German Roman Catholic priest and theologian. Until 1986 he was Professor of the New Testament at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . Lohfink works as a theologian in the Catholic Integrated Congregation (KIG). He is the younger brother of the Old Testament writer Norbert Lohfink .

Life

Lohfink passed the Abitur in 1954 at Heinrich-von-Gagern-Gymnasium . He initially studied German and Latin studies for two semesters at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . From the summer semester of 1955 he studied philosophy and theology at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen ; In 1957 he passed the final exam in philosophy. In 1957/1958 he studied theology at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He passed the final theological exam in 1960 at St. Georgen University, and in the same year Bishop Wilhelm Kempf ordained him as a priest. From 1961 to 1963 he wasChaplain in the parish of St. Ursula in Oberursel .

At the suggestion of Professors Heinrich Schlier and Heinrich Bacht , Bishop Kempf granted him permission to do a doctorate in theology on the condition that he would initially help out as a school priest in Frankfurt for another year. From April 22, 1963 to March 31, 1964, Lohfink was a school priest at the Heinrich-von-Gagern-Gymnasium in Frankfurt am Main. In 1964 he continued his theology studies at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . In addition to his academic work, he gave lectures, especially in Catholic adult education and in training for priests. 1971 Lohfink was in Würzburg with the dissertation Die Himmelfahrt Jesu. PhD studies on the Ascension and Exaltation texts with Lukas . With the work The Gathering of Israel. In 1973 he qualified as a professor for a study on Lukan ecclesiology .

In 1973 Lohfink was appointed Scientific Councilor and Professor for the New Testament subject in the Catholic Theology Department of the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. In 1976 he was appointed full professor for the New Testament in the Catholic Theology department at the University of Tübingen. In 1979/80, as vice dean of the theological faculty, he was involved in the ecclesiastical dispute over Hans Küng , whom he had previously supported , and in the end he spoke out in public (e.g. in the FAZ ) for his exclusion from the faculty. In 1987 he left university at his own request in order to live and work in the Catholic Integrated Congregation . His main research interests are ecclesiology and eschatology. At the same time he continues his lecturing activities. His books have been translated into many languages.

Since 2008 Lohfink has been working at the “Chair for the Theology of the People of God” at the Pontifical Lateran University , as well as in the postgraduate distance learning that the chair offers as a two-year course in German and English.
