Norbert Lohfink

Norbert Lohfink SJ (born July 28, 1928 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German Roman Catholic priest and theologian belonging to the Jesuit order . He is professor emeritus for exegesis of the Old Testament at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main.

Lohfink has been a Jesuit since 1947 and was ordained a priest in 1956 . After studying in Munich, Frankfurt, Rome, Paris and Jerusalem, he obtained the degrees: Lic. Phil. (Munich 1953), Lic. Theol. (Frankfurt 1957), Dr. in re biblica (Rome 1962), Dr. hc (Vienna 1993). From 1962 he taught at the Sankt Georgen University of Applied Sciences in Frankfurt am Main until 1996, as well as at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. His main areas are: Deuteronomic Literature , Ecclesiastes and the Psalms . He is the founder or co-founder of the series Stuttgart Biblical Studies and Stuttgart Biblical Essays , co-editor of the Yearbook for Biblical Theology and the Journal for Ancient Near Eastern and Biblical Legal History .

As early as the 1980s, Lohfink reflected on the formula coined by Pope John Paul II of the never-revoked Old Covenant on an exegetical basis. He was heavily involved in Judeo-Christian dialogue , but made it clear that statements critical of the Jews in the New Testament, especially in the Gospel of John , should not be "swept under the carpet", as Ludger Schwienhorst-Schönberger emphasized on his 90th birthday.

Norbert Lohfink is the brother of Gerhard Lohfink . Both belong to the Catholic Integrated Congregation .
