The great council decisions, the liturgical reform , the new version of the Revelation Constitution and the other great documents meant, according to his perception, a liberation. However, the theological processing of the council after three decades leaves a lot to be desired.
From 2004, 40 years after the Council, Hünermann and Bernd Jochen Hilberath published a new, five-volume theological commentary on the teaching documents of the Second Vatican Council, which was written to Pope Benedict XVI , who was also a professor of dogmatics in Tübingen . was presented in February 2006 on the sidelines of a general audience.
In connection with the withdrawal of the excommunication of the Society of St. Pius X. in 2009, he spoke of an "abuse of office" by the Pope.
With ecumenical intent, Hünermann advocates decentralized, synodal processes.
