tasks

The main areas of activity of KAAD were redefined in 1991:

  • Scholarships for foreigners to support students from overseas and Eastern Europe in Germany
  • Promotion of young professionals from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe, in particular through postgraduate studies and research stays in Germany, so that they can take on leadership roles in the social and cultural development of their home country out of social responsibility and church engagement
  • Partnership cooperation between the German church and churches in the southern hemisphere and Eastern Europe, as well as the general dialogue between the world religions ; At the same time, as future multipliers in the academic-scientific field and beyond , the scholarship holders should help in the development process of their countries
  • Supervision of former foreign scholarship holders and involvement of committed ecclesiastical lay people as well as non-Christian students and researchers (alumni) in the supervision of foreign students in Germany

Within the framework defined by the program guidelines, the KAAD is a general "clearing point" of the German Bishops' Conference for foreign students. The awarding of the scholarships for foreigners is carried out either by partner committees, which are awarded to postgraduates from representatives of the respective home churches and the universities ("invitation programs") or by the right of Catholic student and university communities to propose foreign students from so-called developing countries who are in an advanced phase of their studies in Germany.

In addition, the KAAD organizes seminars at home and abroad, a one-week annual academy, local meetings at the university locations and an annual study and pilgrimage to Rome .

In 2006 there were 2775 initial inquiries for grants. A total of 545 applications were approved.
