history

Missio building in Aachen

In 1819, 23-year-old Pauline Marie Jaricot founded the Lyon Mission Association (officially the work of spreading the faith from May 3, 1922 ). Your idea of donation aid quickly found an echo in Germany.

In 1832 the Aachen doctor Heinrich Hahn and his friends founded the Franziskus-Xaverius-Verein to support the Catholic missions. Heinrich Hahn came across the yearbooks of the Lyon Association while visiting a sick person in Montzen, Belgium, and set up a German branch with like-minded people. They organized themselves and collected donations, but had to struggle for church and state recognition for ten years. At the same time, the Ludwig Mission Association supported by King Ludwig I was established in Munich . The missios principle emerged as a “citizens' initiative from below”, as a lay initiative.

Missio has been the successor to the Papal Work on Propagating the Faith in Germany since January 1st, 1972. This branch of the Pontifical Work of Propagating the Faith was established under Pope Pius XI. Erected by Motu proprio on May 3, 1922. Until 1972, the mission work was supported by the Franziskus-Xaverius-Verein (FXV) in Aachen, which had existed since 1841 and which had been called the Papal Work for Propagating the Faith (PWG) since 1922 .

In the Munich headquarters of the International Catholic Missionary Organization, the House of the Universal Church , there is the Missio House Chapel , which has been equipped with works by 16 Malawian wood sculptors since 1988 .

Today, missio Aachen and Munich say they have around half a million members together. The work of missio is supported by membership fees and donations.

Tasks and key themes

  • Collections in all parishes on World Mission Sunday and the Feast of the Epiphany (Epiphany).
  • In addition, missio supports projects in the local churches in Africa , Asia , Oceania and Latin America in the fields of acute aid, pastoral work, training and maintenance.
  • In addition, it does educational work to create a universal church awareness in and outside the Catholic Church. The main themes of the mission work are: mission, human rights, charity, peace work and spirituality.
  • Support for aid projects from other organizations

Campaigns

missio also reaches out to the public with campaigns to raise awareness of the concerns of people in need in Africa , Asia and Oceania :

  • The “Guardian Angel Campaign - For families in need. Worldwide. ”Focuses on the dramatic situation of refugee families in the Congo. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has been the scene of the bloodiest conflicts since World War II since 1996. Rebel groups in Eastern Congo capture coltan mines and illegally sell the rare ore used to make cell phones. The civilian population is brutally evicted. Rape is used as a weapon of war. Women and families in particular suffer from the unbelievable brutality. A central element of the campaign is the missio truck, a walk-in truck that draws attention to the refugee problem in Africa.
  • The campaigns “Solidarity with oppressed Christians” and “Action Signs of Life” present the fate of Christians who are discriminated against, harassed or in some cases persecuted in the Near and Middle East, Africa and Asia. What is important to missio is the role of interreligious dialogue as a means of resolving conflicts and helping Christians under pressure, the indivisibility of the human right to religious freedom, which applies to members of all religions and non-believers alike, and the appeal for tolerance and reconciliation. An example of this is a postcard campaign in 2016 for the Syrian Catholic priest Jacques Mourad , who, despite being kidnapped by terrorists of the so-called “Islamic State” for five months, continues to campaign for peace and reconciliation between Christians and Muslims.
  • The “Share Faith. Worldwide. ”Wants to make Christian spirituality from Africa, Asia and Oceania accessible to the people in Germany, which they can use in their everyday life of faith or for church work. missio presents men and women at the same time who bear witness to the loving, philanthropic God in an extraordinary way. In addition to Mother Teresa, these witnesses of faith include the singer Patricia Kelly and missio project partners.
  • On the Sunday of World Mission in October, missio designs its central annual campaign every year. Every year the campaign focuses on the church's engagement in the partner countries. On the Sunday of the World Mission (the penultimate Sunday in October; only in Germany on the fourth Sunday) the life of the churches in the "countries of the south" will be discussed and their work in the fight for human rights, charity and peace work will be presented.
  • The campaign for Africa Day in Germany benefits church employees who work for freedom, justice and peace in Africa . The donations are used for training and further education. Gundula Gause has been the patron of Africa Day since 2002.
