Pauline Marie Jaricot (* July 22, 1799 in Lyon , France ; † January 9, 1862 ibid) was the founder of the Work of Propagation of the Faith , the Childhood Jesus Association and the Living Rosary .

Life

She was the daughter of a rich silk manufacturer.

After a conversion experience, in 1816 she began to give away her fortune to workers, the sick, the needy and for religious purposes. In support of the mission, she campaigned for a national mission association from 1819 onwards , whose members undertook to pray a day and to donate a sou every week .

The association grew rapidly and was officially established on May 3, 1822 as an internationally oriented work for the spread of the faith (French Société pour la Propagation de la foi ). In France he worked as the "Lyon Mission Association".

Jaricot founded the " Sacred Heart of Jesus Atonement" among the workers and maids, in 1826 the Living Rosary ( L'œuvre du Rosaire in French ) and helped found the Childhood Jesus Association .

On August 10, 1835, she was healed of a serious illness at the grave of St. Philomena in Mugnano and then promoted the veneration of this saint in France.

She tried to improve the lot of the workers by buying an ore smelter at Apt in 1845 , which she wanted to run on worker-friendly principles. The factory administrators embezzled the money, the company collapsed in 1852, and she lost all of her fortune. She was attacked and reviled and lived in poverty until her death in 1862.

In 1922, their mission association was transformed into the "Papal Work for Propagating the Faith" with its seat in Rome .

She has been buried in the Saint-Nizier church in Lyon since 1935. A beatification process was initiated for them , in the course of which Pope Francis recognized on May 26, 2020 a miracle attributed to his intercession as the final prerequisite for beatification.
