José Santiago Cañizares Ruiz (born December 18, 1969 in Madrid ) is a former Spanish soccer player who last worked as a goalkeeper for Valencia CF.

career

Cañizares started his career with the Spanish record champions Real Madrid , but he changed clubs after a short time. At RC Celta de Vigo he was a fixture in goal and only missed two league games. In 1994 Real Madrid bought him back for three million euros, he signed a contract for four years.

Valencia CF

Again Cañizares could not really prevail and so moved to Valencia CF in the 1998/99 season . Here he managed to secure a regular place in goal, and in his first season at Mestalla Stadium he never missed a game and won the Spanish Cup with his team. In the next few years he played two UEFA Champions League finals with Valencia CF. In 2002 he helped win the Spanish championship before an injury thwarted his plans for the 2002/03 season.

In the 2003/04 season he found his form back and had to accept only 25 goals in 37 games. He's even had a streak in which he was clean five times in a row. Cañizares has always played in Europe and he kept his goal clean in the UEFA Cup final against Olympique Marseille . Valencia won this final 2-0, and they were once again champions in the Primera División .

In December 2006 Cañizares extended his contract, which expired in 2007, for another two years until 2009. In December 2007, the Spaniard was kicked out of the squad by coach Ronald Koeman and asked to look for a new club. Due to the regulations, however, he could not change to another club from the Spanish Primera División during the current season . Five months later, Koeman has since been fired, Cañizares was called back to the team by new coach Voro . At the same time, however, Voro declared that he would continue to rely on Timo Hildebrand as a regular goalkeeper. Because Hildebrand was unable to play due to an injury, Cañizares was used again from the start in the first game after his return to the league against CA Osasuna and took place on the bench again in the following games after Hildebrand's recovery. At the end of the season, his contract with Valencia was terminated. After Valencia secured relegation on the penultimate matchday of the season, Cañizares was allowed to play his farewell game against Atlético Madrid on the last matchday at Valencia.

National team

In 1992 Cañizares won the gold medal with Spain at the Summer Olympics . In November 1993 he made his debut for the Spanish senior team when he came on after ten minutes against Denmark. He did not concede a goal and thus bought Spain's ticket for the 1994 World Cup , where he was used once, like two years later, at EURO 1996 . Cañizares made his breakthrough in 2000 at the finals in Belgium and the Netherlands, where he played three times.

In Japan and South Korea in 2002 , Cañizares would have been Spain's regular goalkeeper had he not been the victim of an accident immediately before the tournament due to a dropped aftershave bottle in which he injured a tendon in his foot. At the EURO 2004 and the 2006 World Cup , he took part as the second goalkeeper, where he was used in the last group game against Saudi Arabia in 2006 and remained clean.

In total, Cañizares made 46 games for the national team .
