The Primera División 1996/97 was the 66th season of the highest Spanish football league . It started on September 1, 1996 and ended on June 22, 1997. The league was then reduced back to the regular league size of 20 clubs for the 1997/98 season.

Real Madrid became Spanish champions for the 27th time.
