The Segunda División 1996/97 was the 66th season of the second highest Spanish football league . It began on August 31, 1996 and ended on June 15, 1997. Between June 25 and 29, 1996, the play-off games were played. Master became CP Mérida .

Before the season

The 20 teams met twice on 38 match days. The two best teams went straight to the Primera División . The third placed played against the 18th of the Primera División for promotion. The last four clubs were relegated.

Relegated from the Primera División took Albacete Balompié , CP Mérida and UD Salamanca in part. From the Segunda División B came Levante UD , UD Las Palmas , Atlético Madrid B and CD Ourense .
