Constantin Gâlcă (born March 8, 1972 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach .

He completed a total of 183 games in the Romanian Divizia A , 199 games in the Spanish Primera División and 82 games in the Spanish Segunda División . He participated in the 1994 FIFA World Cup , the UEFA EURO 1996 , the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the European Football Championship in 2000 in part.

Career as a player

At the age of 16 years Gâlcă came his home club in the first team Progresul Bucharest , which at that time only in the third-rate Divizia C played. In 1989, higher class associations were aware of him and Gâlcă moved in the same year for FC Arges Pitesti in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A . There he made his first appearance on December 6, 1989. Although he was only used four times, he made it to the Romanian U21 national team at the age of 18. He then became a regular at FC Argeş, so he recommended himself for higher tasks and in 1991 dared to jump to one of the best Romanian clubs, Steaua Bucharest .

At Steaua he finally made his breakthrough and Gâlcă became an indispensable regular player who was characterized by dangerous long-range shots, great commitment and excellent duel behavior. With Steaua he was Romanian champion four times in a row from 1993 to 1996 and won the Romanian Cup once. Only the successes in the European Cup failed to materialize.

After five years in Bucharest, during which he became a legend at a young age, he ventured abroad in 1996 and joined the Spanish club RCD Mallorca , which at the time played in the Segunda División and was aiming for promotion to the Primera División . The goal was achieved and Gâlcă had a large share in it with 13 goals this season. He left Mallorca after the promotion and moved to Espanyol Barcelona . With Espanyol he could not establish himself in the Spanish top. The greatest success came in 2000, when the club won the Copa del Rey , winning a title for the first time in 60 years.

In 2001 Gâlcă moved to league rivals FC Villarreal . Here, too, he became a pillar of the team and contributed a large part to reaching 15th place and thus relegation. At the beginning of the following season 2002/03 he was no longer a regular player due to an injury and was loaned to the Segunda División at Real Saragossa , where he succeeded in promotion. However, he did not return to Villarreal as he was already past his prime. Gâlcă moved again to the Segunda División on a free transfer and joined UD Almería . Here he experienced his second spring and even managed to return to the national team in 2005. In 2006 he dared to jump into the Primera División to Gimnàstic de Tarragona , but ended his career after one season in the summer of 2007 without having played a single time.

National team

Gâlcă played a total of 68 games for the Romanian national football team and scored four goals. He made his debut on September 22, 1993 against Israel . Together with Dorinel Munteanu, he formed a strong duo in defensive midfield. Gâlcă participated in the 1994 World Cup in the USA, the 1996 European Football Championship in England, the 1998 World Cup in France and the 2000 European Football Championship in Belgium and the Netherlands. where he was always a regular up to 1994. After his 66th international match in 2002, national coach Victor Pițurcă brought him back for two games.

Gâlcă also scored 2 goals in 14 games for the Romanian U21 national team.

Career as a coach

In June 2009 Gâlcă began his coaching career in the Spanish Tercera División (fourth division) with the second team of UD Almería . After the dismissal of Hugo Sánchez as coach of the first team on December 21, 2009, Gâlcă was initially under discussion as an interim coach, but was dismissed as coach of the second team on January 19, 2010 after a disappointing season.

In August 2013 he became the coach of the Romanian U-17 national team, where he replaced Nicolae Ungureanu .

On June 2, 2014 Gâlcă was introduced as the new coach of Steaua Bucharest , as the successor to Laurențiu Reghecampf . At the end of his first season in 2014/15 , Gâlcă won the national triple consisting of championship, cup and league cup victory.

As of December 2015, Constantin Gâlcă was the head coach of Espanyol Barcelona . His contract ended on June 30, 2016 and was not extended by the club. In October 2016 he became the coach of the Saudi Arabian club al-Taawon . He resigned from his position in March 2017. In May 2017 he became head coach of newly promoted al-Fayha FC .
