Nicolae "Nae" Ungureanu (born November 11, 1956 in Craiova ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach . He played a total of 437 games in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A, and took part in the European Football Championship in 1984 .

Player career

Ungureanu began his career in the youth team of CSȘ Craiova and switched to Electroputere Craiova , who played in the second-rate Divizia B at the age of 18 . There the local rival Universitatea Craiova became aware of him and signed him in 1977. At Uni Craiova he experienced the most successful period of the club: He won the Romanian championship there in 1980 and 1981 and the Romanian cup in 1978, 1981 and 1983. In the European Cup he reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in the 1982/83 season , where the team was eliminated only due to the away goals rule against Benfica Lisbon .

In 1987 he left Craiova and joined Steaua Bucharest , one of the best clubs in Europe at the time. At Steaua, two more championships followed in 1988 and 1989, as well as reaching the final in the European Cup in 1988/89 , which was lost to AC Milan . In 1992 Ungureanu left Steaua and moved to local rivals Rapid Bucharest , where he ended his career in 1993.

National team

Ungureanu played a total of 57 games for the Romanian national soccer team and scored one goal. He made his debut on April 8, 1981 against Israel . National coach Mircea Lucescu nominated him for the 1984 European Football Championship in France and used him in all three games over the full distance. After narrowly missing out on qualifying for the European Football Championship in 1988 , the new coach Emerich Jenei only used him three times and finally did without him entirely.

Coaching career

After the end of his active career, he took over the position of head coach at FC Drobeta Turnu Severin , who was playing in Divizia B at the time . In early April 1994, Electroputere Craiova committed him , which he saved from relegation from the Divizia Națională . After a bad start to the 1994/95 season , he had to leave.

In 1995 Electroputere brought him back in order to achieve promotion to Divizia A. The target was missed by a wide and Ungureanu moved again in 1996 to Turnu Severin, which in Divizia C played. Since the goal of promotion was just missed in second, Ungureanu had to leave the club.

In 1997 Ungureanu took a break as a coach and took over the management of the youth center of Universitatea Craiova , in the further course of the season he also looked after the club's youth team. During the 1998/99 season Ungureanu took over the coaching position in Turnu Severin, which now played in Divizia B, for the third time. In 1999 he got the opportunity to work under the new coach Emil Săndoi at Universitatea Craiova. After his move to Vice President in 2000, Ungureanu initially took over the junior team, but stepped in as head coach as the season progressed. With the 8th place he managed the most successful season of the last years and the qualification for the UEFA Intertoto Cup .

Despite his successful work, his contract at Universitatea Craiova was not renewed and Ungureanu took over Internațional Piteşti in Divizia B. After two years he had to leave Piteşti again in 2003. In 2004 he took over FC Caracal (also Divizia B) and led him to relegation twice. From April 17, 2006 Ungureanu worked for the last seven games of the 2005/06 season for the Divizia A playing club Pandurii Târgu Jiu , which he led as the successor to Viorel Hizo to relegation. He then became assistant coach of Ovidiu Stîngă at Universitatea Craiova, with whom he left the club in September 2006, however. On March 12, 2007 Ungureanu returned as head coach to FC Caracal and replaced the unsuccessful Emil Vlăduț . FC Caracal finished the season in seventh place of its season, but started the following season with two draws and eight defeats. Ungureanu then dissolved his contract on October 24, 2007 and was replaced by the former coach of Universitatea Craiova , Florin Cioroianu . In September 2008 he became assistant coach of Ștefan Stoica at Internațional Curtea de Argeş , with whom the promotion to League 1 succeeded at the end of the season . In July 2009, Ungureanu received clearance from his association to start as Technical Director at Universitatea Craiova.
