Ștefan Stoica (born June 23, 1967 in Negoieşti , Dolj district ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach .

Player career

On April 12, 1987 Stoica made his debut in the Romanian Divizia A in the game of FC Universitatea Craiova against Oțelul Galați . With this club he was able to celebrate his first national successes at a young age. Especially in the 1990/91 season, when the club won the double with the national cup and the championship. Then he moved to Greece to AE Larisa . In 1994 he was loaned to his ex-club for a short time, but returned to Larisa. From 1996 to 1999 Stoica played for Veria FC . At the end of his career, the Romanian made a brief guest appearance at one of the largest clubs in his home country, Steaua Bucharest , and then until the end of the season at the then league competitor FC Extensiv Craiova .

National team

Stoica played two games for the Romanian national soccer team in 1990. On February 4, 1990, he played his first international match in a 0-0 draw against Algeria . He made his second game against Switzerland .

Coaching career

In October 2006 the Romanian took over the coaching position at his former club FC Universitatea Craiova . On August 15, 2007, Stoica was the successor to Ilie Stan coach of the Romanian first division club Gloria Buzau . At the end of the 2007/08 season he reached 14th place in the table with his club and thus narrow relegation. At the beginning of the 2008/09 season , the team lost the first three championship games. Stoica was released on August 11, 2008 and replaced by former Portuguese international Álvaro Magalhães . In September 2008 he took over from Liviu Ciobotariu as coach at Internațional Curtea de Argeș in Liga II . At the end of the season, the club made 2nd place in the table and thus rose to the first Romanian league. Shortly before Christmas 2009, Stoica was released. Before the turn of the year he signed a contract with the second division Farul Constanța , but was released on April 3, 2010.

From September 2010, Stoica coached the Moldovan first division club FC Milsami , with whom he qualified for the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League as third in the 2010/11 Divizia Națională . There the club was eliminated in the first qualifying round against Dinamo Tbilisi and after the 1: 2 away defeat by FC Nistru Otaci on the second match day of the 2011/12 season , Stoica was dismissed by Ilan Șor, the club's patron, on July 31, 2011 . After he was introduced again as coach by Gloria Buzău on July 6, 2012 , he replaced the German Rainer Zobel at his previous station in Milsami just a few months later on October 23, 2012 .

At the beginning of the 2015/16 season , Stoica was the head coach of the Moldovan first division club Zimbru Chișinău . In September 2015 he also became the Moldovan national coach . He supervised the selection in October 2015 in two European Championship qualifiers against Russia and Sweden . Both games were lost. At the end of 2015, he gave up both posts. At the beginning of 2017 he took over Zimbru again.
