Álvaro Monteiro de Magalhães (born January 3, 1961 in Lamego ) is a former Portuguese football player and football coach.
Career
Alvaro started his career in 1979 at Academica Coimbra . In 1981 he moved to his first major club, Benfica Lisbon . He won the Portuguese championship title four times, the Portuguese Cup four times and the Portuguese Supercup twice in Lisbon . During his time in the capital, he took part in the European Football Championship in France in 1984 (from the semi-finals), where Alvaro was used four times and received a yellow card. He also took part in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico . Portugal were eliminated in the group stage, Alvaro was used three times.
From 1990 to 1993 he played with Estrela Amadora , where he ended his career.
After the playing career
He started as a coach in 1994 at Lourousa, a sub-class Portuguese club. He came to Benfica Lisbon in 2003 via CD Santa Clara , GD Chaves , Gil Vicente FC , where he won the championship title as assistant coach to Giovanni Trapattoni in 2005, and in 2004 the trophy was won. He then trained at Naval 1º de Maio , SC Olhanense and CD Feirense . In August 2008 he took over the Romanian first division club Gloria Buzau after the third match day of the 2007/08 season , but was dismissed after six defeats in seven winless championship games in early October.

Alvaro is affected by polydactyly , which is why he was nicknamed seis dedos ("six fingers") in Portugal .
