Gil Vicente Futebol Clube is a football club from Portugal whose team last played in the Primeira Liga from 2011 to 2015 . It was founded in 1924 and is based in Barcelos - in northern Portugal . It bears the name of the dramaturge Gil Vicente , after whom the theater in Barcelos was named, near which the founders played football. The home stadium is called Estádio Cidade de Barcelos and has space for 12,504 spectators. The club colors are red and blue.
history
The first promotion to the highest Portuguese football league came in 1990, where the club was well established. 1997 followed a relegation to the second division. In 1999 Gil Vicente was able to rise again as champions of the Segunda League . At the end of the 2005/06 season , the forced relegation was due to the use of a player without a contract. In 2011 the club returned to the Primeira Liga. At the end of the 2014/15 season , the club relegated back to the second division and at the end of the 2017/18 season there was another relegation to the third highest division in Portugal. For the 2019/20 season , the club was promoted directly from the third to the highest league in Portugal (Primeira Liga), as an appeals court in 2016 declared the 2006 forced relegation illegal and therefore null and void.
At this football club, players like Paulo Martins Alves , later for Sporting Lisbon , and Nuno Capucho played at a young age . The Yugoslav player Ljubinko Drulović , who was later successful at FC Porto, also came from the club in Barcelos.
Oddities
The association was led for some time by friars and in the season 1974/75 led by the pastor José Maria Furtado out of a financial crisis.
The club was transferred to the second division in the 2006/07 season. The reason for the forced relegation was the use of the player Mateus Galiano da Costa without a legally valid contract.
