The Club Sport Marítimo , CS Marítimo for short and known in German-speaking countries as Marítimo Funchal (more rarely Marítimo Madeira ), is a football club from the Portuguese city of Funchal on the island of Madeira . The club has played in the country's top division without interruption since the 1970s .

The club was founded on September 20, 1910 as Club Português de Sport Marítimo by Cândido Fernandes de Gouveia. The club took on the colors of the Portuguese flag as the club colors to differentiate itself from the local rivals Club Sports da Madeira. The name Marítimo comes from the fact that many players worked in the port of Funchal back then.

The first game was played against CD Santa Clara . Marítimo won 2-1. Later, the team mostly played against British sailors.
