Club Sport Marítimo , known in German-speaking countries as Marítimo Caracas , was a football club from the Venezuelan capital Caracas . The club was founded in 1959 and played its home games at the Estadio Brígido Iriarte , which can seat 10,000 spectators. Club Sport Marítimo was four times Venezuelan football champions and dissolved in 1995. Most recently there have been efforts to re-found the association.

history

The club was founded in 1959 by Portuguese immigrants in Venezuela's capital, Caracas . The immigrants came from the Madeira archipelago , where the football club Marítimo Funchal is based. The club name Club Sport Marítimo, often just Marítimo Caracas , arose from this club . Initially, the newly founded club played in the lower leagues of Venezuelan football for many years without any real success.

It wasn't until 1985 that Club Sport Marítimo made it into the Primera División for the first time with a first place in the Segunda División, the second highest league in Venezuela . In the first division, the club was able to establish itself quickly and became Venezuelan football champions for the first time in the second first division season. This succeeded three more times, in 1987/88, 1989/90 and 1992/93. In addition, the Venezuelan cup competition, the Copa Venezuela, was won in 1987 and 1989. In its most successful period, Club Sport Marítimo took part in the Copa Libertadores , the most important competition for club teams in South America, five times . In four of the five participations, however, the end came in the group stage, i.e. in the first round. In the Copa Libertadores 1992 they finished third in Group 3 behind the two Ecuadorian teams Barcelona SC Guayaquil and Valdez Milagro and ahead of Universidad de Los Andes FC . The group stage was over and they played in the round of 16 against Atlético Nacional from Colombia , where they were eliminated with a 0-0 in Caracas and a 0-3 in Bogotá .

Only a few years after Club Sport Marítimo's last championship title came the decline of the club. After severe financial problems, Club Sport Marítimo was dissolved in 1995 and struck from the club register. In the years that followed, work was continued on re-establishing the club, with Marítimo Funchal also trying to get the partner club in Venezuela to resume play. So they considered a merger of the two clubs. Furthermore, from 2006 a new training ground and soccer schools were built on behalf of Club Sport Marítimo. Club Sport Marítimo intends to return to league operations in the near future.
