The Copa Libertadores 1988 was the 29th edition of the most important South American football competition for club teams. 21 teams took part. The national champions of the CONMEBOL countries and the runners-up took part. Defending champion Club Atlético Peñarol completed the field . The tournament began on June 29 and ended on October 26, 1988 with the final second leg. Uruguayan representatives Nacional Montevideo won the final against Newell's Old Boys and won the Copa Libertadores for the third time .
