Copa santander libertadores new.jpg

The 2011 Copa Libertadores , also known as the Copa Santander Libertadores due to the sponsorship of the Santander banking group , was the 52nd edition of the most important South American football competition for club teams. A total of 38 teams took part this season, 35 from the 10 member associations of CONMEBOL , including defending champions SC Internacional from Brazil and the 2010 Copa Sudamericana winner CA Independiente from Argentina, and 3 from Mexico. The tournament began on January 25th with the qualifying round and ended on June 22nd with the final second leg.

Participating teams

The following teams took part in the 2011 Copa Libertadores. Since SC Internacional is automatically qualified as defending champion, Brazil was allowed to send six instead of the usual five participants to the tournament, with two having to qualify. Mexico, which actually belongs to CONCACAF , sent three teams to the tournament, one of which had to qualify. The teams that still had to qualify for the main round are marked with a (Q) in the table.

mode

If there was a tie in the group stage, the goal difference was decisive for progress, then the number of goals scored, then the number of goals scored away . If these were also the same, the lot decided. In the knockout rounds, the away goal rule also applied in the event of a tie in points and goals. If their number was the same, a penalty shoot-out followed immediately without extra time . Only in the final was there an extra time when the score was tied 90 minutes before the penalty shoot-out .

qualification

The first legs took place from January 25 to 27, the second legs from February 1 to 3, 2011. The first team had home rights in the first leg, the second in the second leg.
