← Copa Libertadores 2018
|
|
The Copa Libertadores 2019 , officially also Copa Conmebol Libertadores 2019 , was the 60th edition of the most important South American football competition for club teams. The competition was organized by the South American football association CONMEBOL . A total of 47 teams took part in the 2019 season, including defending champion River Plate from Argentina and the winner of the Copa Sudamericana 2018 Athletico Paranaense from Brazil. The tournament began on January 22, 2019 with the qualifying round and ended on November 23, 2019 with the final. For the first time in the history of the competition, the winner was no longer determined in a two-way leg, but in a decider.
The Estadio Nacional in the Chilean capital Santiago was planned for this final . Because of the protests in Chile , the CONMEBOL association, together with the two finalists Flamengo and River Plate, decided on November 5th to relocate the venue to the largest stadium in South America, the Estadio Monumental in Lima , which can hold over 80,000 spectators .
Flamengo qualified as the winner of the competition for the Recopa Sudamericana 2020 and the FIFA Club World Cup 2019 .
Participating teams
The following teams took part in the 2019 Copa Libertadores.
28 clubs qualified directly for the group stage :
Thirteen clubs qualified for the second qualifying round :
- Argentina: sixth place in the country qualification
- Brazil: places six and seven in the country qualification
- Chile and Colombia: third and fourth places in the country qualification
- All other associations: third place in the national qualification
6 clubs qualified for the first qualifying round :
- fourth place from the country qualifications of Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela
Qualifying rounds
The qualifying round took place in three stages. The first team had home rights in the first leg, the second in the second leg.
Qualification draw
The draws for the games in the qualification and group stages took place on December 17, 2018 at the CONMEBOL Convention Center in Luque (Paraguay) . The teams were seeded in the Copa Libertadores according to their CONMEBOL ranking. Three factors were taken into account:
- Performance over the past 10 years, taking into account Copa Libertadores results in 2009–2018
- Historical coefficient, taking into account the Copa Libertadores results for the period 1960–2008
- National championship with bonus points to national champions of the last 10 years
The first and second qualifying rounds and the group stage were drawn. No draw was made for the third round of qualification, the pairings were determined in advance. The numbers in brackets are the result of the CONMEBOL ranking.
First qualifying round draw
For the first qualifying round, six teams were drawn in three pairings:

2nd qualifying round
The second qualifying round matches took place between February 5 and 14, 2019. The first leg pairing between Defensor Sporting Club and Barcelona Sporting Club on February 6 ended 1: 2 for Barcelona . Due to the illegal use of the player Sebastián Pérez Cardona by Barcelona , CONMEBOL decided to score the game 3-0 for Defensor .
3rd qualifying round
The third qualifying round matches took place between February 19 and 28, 2019. The two best losing teams according to the CONMEBOL rating qualified for participation in the Copa Sudamericana 2019 .
Qualifying table for the Copa Sudamericana 2019
Group stage
Group stage draw
For the group stage, the 32 teams were drawn into eight groups of four teams from each of the four pots. Teams from the same association could not be drawn into the same group, with the exception of the third qualifying round winners, who were assigned to Pot 4. As in the second qualifying round, these qualifiers can meet clubs from their association in the group stage.
River Plate was placed as the defending champion in pot 1 and Athletico Paranaense as the winner of the Copa Sudamericana 2018 in pot 2.
Group stage mode
If there is a tie in the group stage, the goal difference is decisive for progress, then the number of goals scored, then the number of goals scored away . If these are also the same, the lot decided. In the knockout rounds, the away goal rule also applied in the event of a tie in points and goals. If their number is the same, a penalty shoot-out immediately followed without extra time .

Final round
The first and second in each group qualified for the round of 16. To determine the other pairings from the round of 16, two lottery pots were formed. The group winners came into one pot, all runners-up in another. The draw took place on May 13, 2019 at the CONMEBOL Convention Center in Luque , Paraguay .
The following overview shows the table of the first and second placed in the group stage. If the point and goal difference are equal, the next criterion is the number of goals scored.
