history

The stadium in 1949

The Estadio Tomás Adolfo Ducó in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina and also the largest city in the country with almost three million inhabitants, was built between 1941 and 1949 and opened on September 11, 1949. For the first official game in the new stadium, the future user club, the CA Huracán football club, and the Uruguayan series champion CA Peñarol from Montevideo met for a friendly game, which Huracán won 4-1. Even before this game there was an unofficial opening of the Estadio Tomás Adolfo Ducó when Huracán beat Boca Juniors 4: 3 in this stadium . Since then, CA Huracán has used the stadium as a venue for home football matches. The club was once Argentine champion to this day. In 1973 they won the only championship in the club's history under the leadership of César Luis Menotti . CA Huracán is currently playing in the Argentine second division, Primera B Nacional , after the last place in the Primera División was occupied in the past season (Clausura 2011) and they had to be relegated.

The Estadio Tomás Adolfo Ducó is named after Tomás Adolfo Ducó (1901–1964), an Argentine military and former president of CA Huracán. In honor of his services, the city of Buenos Aires decided in 1939 to build a stadium for his club with the name of Ducó. Nowadays, the Estadio Tomás Adolfo Ducó can seat 48,314 spectators. However, the stadium is rarely filled, as it is just one of many big ones in Buenos Aires and Huracán, which is currently not one of the best teams in Argentine football, cannot mobilize as many supporters either.

In 2007 the Estadio Tomás Adolfo Ducó was named a historic building by the Argentine government, which was justified by the special architecture and the fact that the game can be watched from all locations in this stadium. The Estadio Tomás Adolfo Ducó is also known for its good acoustics. Many live albums have already been recorded here, for example one of the Argentine hard rock band La Renga . In 2010, director Juan José Campanella used the stadium as the setting in his film In Her Eyes . The film was named best foreign language film at the 2010 Academy Awards .
