history
The Estadio Ciudad de La Plata in La Plata , the capital of the province of Buenos Aires , was built in 2003. Since the Estudiantes de La Plata club was able to attract more and more spectators to the Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi and the stadium, which only had a capacity of 20,000, was almost always sold out, the decision was made in the late 1990s to build a new stadium in La Plata. After the end of the construction phase, which lasted from 1997 to 2003, the stadium was opened in 2003. At the first game in the new stadium, La Plata's two top clubs, Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata, and the future arena user, Estudiantes de La Plata, met for a friendly match.
When it became known that Argentina , the Copa America 2011 would align became the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata selected as one of eight stadiums for the tournament. For this reason, it was temporarily closed in 2009 so that small renovations could be carried out. Among other things, a new roof was installed for the arena. On February 17, 2011, the stadium was reopened and six days later the first soccer match between Estudiantes and Deportes Tolima took place in a group match of the Copa Libertadores .
In 2011, the Irish rock band U2 (March 30, April 2 and 3; U2 360 ° Tour ), the American rock band Pearl Jam (November 13; Pearl Jam 20th anniversary tour ) and singer Britney performed Spears (November 20; Femme Fatale Tour ) at the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata. In February 2016, The Rolling Stones gave 3 concerts here, with an audience of around 51,000 each.
