history

The Estadio del Bicentenario in San Juan , a city with over 100,000 inhabitants in western Argentina , located in an oasis , was built between 2009 and 2011 and opened on March 16, 2011. For the first game in the new stadium, the Argentine national soccer team and the Venezuela national team met for a friendly game, which Argentina won 4-1. Starting in 2011, the stadium will be used by the local CA San Martín de San Juan club as a venue for home football matches. The Estadio del Bicentenario replaced the Estadio Ingeniero Hilario Sánchez as the home of CA San Martín, which offered space for 19,000 spectators and has hosted the football games of the San Juan club since 1951. The club currently plays in the first-class Primera División , after the third place in the second division, the Primera B Nacional , was occupied in the past season (2010/11) and after winning relegation games against Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata, the promotion succeeded.

The Estadio del Bicentenario was built for the Copa América 2011 , which Argentina had secured, and is one of the venues during the tournament. With a capacity of over 25,000 spectators during the tournament, it is the third smallest stadium at the Copa America . During the tournament three games will take place in San Juan, two of which will be in the preliminary round and one in the quarter-finals.
