The Estadio Brigadier General Estanislao López is a football stadium in the Argentine city of Santa Fe . It has space for 47,000 spectators and is the home of the CA Colón association .

history

The Estadio Brigadier General Estanislao López in Santa Fe, a city in northeast Argentina, was built in 1946 and opened on July 9th of that year. The future user of the arena, CA Colón , and the Boca Juniors from the capital Buenos Aires met for the first game in the new stadium . The game ended with a 2-1 for the hosts in front of Juan Perón and his wife Eva . Since that day, the CA Colón club, founded in 1905, has played its home games at the Estadio Brigadier General Estanislao López. On April 2, 1949, the first game in the stadium took place under floodlights . The CA Colón defeated Club Atlético Huracán with 5-1 goals. Colón has played almost 30 seasons in the highest Argentine league, the Primera División , but has never won the national championship. The only title win of the club is the championship in the second highest Argentine division, the Nacional B , in 1965. CA Colón currently plays in the Primera División, where they finished 14th in the past season (Clausura 2010).

The national team of Argentina has also played a game in this stadium. In 2009 an Argentine B-Elf won 3-1 against Panama . Rugby games are also often held here.

The Estadio Brigadier General Estanislao López is named after Estanislao López (1786–1838), a brigadier general and governor of the province of Santa Fe . In the first years of its existence, the stadium was named after the then Argentine President Juan Domingo Perón and was also called the same as a stadium in Avellaneda , Estadio Juan Domingo Perón . After Perón lost power in the country through a coup in 1955, it was renamed Estadio Brigadier General Estanislao López in the course of the depersonalization under Pedro Eugenio Aramburu . The stadium is also popularly known under the name El Cementerio de Los Elefantes ( German The Elephant Cemetery ) because many large teams have already suffered bitter defeats there.

Today the stadium offers space for 47,000 spectators. It is one of the venues for the 2011 Copa America , which Argentina was able to secure. For the Copa America , the stadium's capacity was increased to 47,000 spectators. Four games were played in Santa Fe during the tournament, including three preliminary round matches and a quarter-finals. In that quarter-final match on July 16, 2011 in front of 47,000 spectators at the sold-out Estadio Brigadier General Estanislao López, hosts Argentina lost to Uruguay on penalties and were eliminated. Before that, coach Sergio Batista's team had not managed to get beyond a goalless draw against Colombia in the CA Colón stadium.
