Elephant cemetery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The so-called elephant cemetery is a widespread myth about elephants .

In the course of its life, an elephant renews its teeth six times . After around 60 years, the last teeth of the elephant are worn out, so that the older animals mostly retreat to swampy areas where softer food grows. Due to the higher concentration of old and weak animals in these areas, more elephants perish in a confined space, which is why the misconception arose that elephants would go to a certain place, the elephant cemetery, to die .

The motif of the elephant cemetery can be found in the Tarzan film adaptations Tarzan's retribution , Tarzan, the lord of the jungle , Tarzan - lord of the jungle and in the animated film The Lion King . In other adventure stories, too, such a cemetery is often the target of enterprising ivory traders .
