action

Englishmen Harry Holt and Martin Arlington meet in an African village to discuss their planned safari. Holt is the ex-boyfriend of Jane Parker, who now lives in the jungle with Tarzan. Holt is secretly hoping to get Jane back, whom he accompanied on her first trip to Africa. He and Arlington bought clothes based on Parisian fashion.

Holt and Arlington head out into the jungle in hopes of finding an elephant graveyard. You will be accompanied by indigenous porters led by the loyal Saidi. Soon the troop is attacked by a tribe of natives. The porters flee in panic, the others are led away from the sacred soil of the tribe. On a cliff they are attacked by angry gorillas. They meet Tarzan and Jane.

Jane makes it clear to Holt that she will never go back. The next morning, Jane is attacked by a lion. Tarzan can save them and kill the lion. Holt and Arlington find their troop again, which now has an elephant with them that Tarzan has called for them. Cheetah, Tarzan's chimpanzee, is killed by a rhinoceros who also attacks Jane. Tarzan kills the animal with a knife. A leopard and a crocodile are then also killed by Tarzan.

During the night Tarzan learns that Arlington and Holt are going to the elephant cemetery and want to steal the ivory. Tarzan refuses to lead the men. Arlington, knowing that dying elephants instinctively go to the cemetery, shoots Tarzan's elephants. He and Holt follow the wounded animal. They reach the cemetery, but when they want to leave with the ivory, they find themselves surrounded by elephants that were brought by Tarzan and Jane. Arlington promises to abandon the ivory and returns to camp with Holt.

The next morning, Arlington shoots Tarzan, who is collecting fruit for breakfast, down and leaves him to be eaten by a crocodile. However, a hippo and a gorilla rescue Tarzan and take him back to the jungle, where Cheetah's daughter Little Cheetah tends to his wounds. Meanwhile, Arlington tells Jane that Tarzan is dead. Now she sees no more reason to stay in the jungle and is preparing to join the safari back. When they set off, Little Cheetah comes to camp and uses sign language to tell Jane that Tarzan is alive. At this moment the safari is attacked by natives. In the fight, in which a pride of hungry lions intervenes, Holt and Arlington are killed. The recovered Tarzan finds Jane and saves her.

background

The MGM production had an estimated budget of $ 1.27 million and grossed over $ 2.2 million worldwide. It was the second Tarzan film with Johnny Weissmüller. In the first film Tarzan, the Ape Man (1932) also starred Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane, Neil Hamilton as Holt and Forrester Harvey as Beamish. O'Sullivan's swimming scenes were doubled by Weissmüller's Olympic team colleague Josephine McKim , who had won a gold and a bronze medal in 1928 and 1932.

The film was the only directing work by Cedric Gibbons, who became famous as an art director and won eleven Oscars. At the time of filming, he was also head of MGM's equipment department. In order to fulfill his duties, he had to be replaced as a director. His replacement was Jack Conway , who finished the film. This film was set by A. Arnold Gillespie , who was honored three times with the Oscar for the best special effects in his later career. His partner was the later two-time Oscar winner Warren Newcombe . The special effects for this film, however, were created by James Basevi . The tone was the responsibility of seven-time Oscar winner Douglas Shearer .

Reviews

“This 'Tarzan' adventure differs from the majority of the series by the realism of the rapidly filmed animal fighting scenes and massacres as well as by the very outmoded erotic clarity,” says the lexicon of international films . For the television magazine Prisma , Tarzan's retaliation was "by far the most erotic Tarzan flick, which also contains the most realistic fight scenes".

Awards

In 2003 the film was entered into the National Film Registry .
