Warren A. Newcombe (born April 28, 1894 in Waltham , Massachusetts , USA , † August 1960 in Los Angeles , California , USA) was an American special effects artist , matte painter and production designer .

life and work

Warren Newcombe studied painting in Boston under Joseph De Camp with a degree in 1914. He then lived in New York City for a few years and moved to Los Angeles in 1918 .

Warren Newcombe first appeared in the early 1920s, initially as a director and producer of the silent films The Enchanted City and Sea of ​​Dreams . During this time he met the actress Hazel Lindsley, whom he married in 1924.

In 1925 he began his long-term work at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer . After interim activities as a matte painter (also later e.g. in The Wizard of Oz ), he was responsible for creating special effects for over 200 film productions from the 1930s onwards. His work at MGM is closely linked to his superior A. Arnold Gillespie , with whom he was jointly awarded three times the Oscar in the category Best Special Effects and was nominated once for this.

At the same time, Warren Newcombe was also an accomplished painter and lithographer , whose works are still traded and publicly exhibited today, e. B. in the Weisman Art Museum ( Minneapolis ) or in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art ( Kansas City ).

Warren Newcombe retired in 1957 after his final work on Alarm in Space and The Land of the Rain Tree . He died in 1960.
