action

After a long absence, the widower Dr. Edmond Ozanne and his son William return to their house on Green Dolphin Street on the English Channel Island of St. Pierre. Their arrival excites the nearby monastery. The Mother Superior rushes to Sophie Patourel, Edmond's former lover, and notifies her of his return. Sophie, now married to the rather simple-minded Octavius Petourel, was once very much in love with Edmond. But the stormy romance was ended by her parents and also by Edmond's drunkenness.

Sophie's daughters, the shy Marguerite and the fun-loving Marianne, both fall in love with the handsome William. Marguerite has a secret admirer in Timothy Haslam, who, however, fled after a fatal knife fight on board the ship Green Dolphin , which is supposed to set sail for New Zealand. Captain O'Hara discovers the stowaway before casting off, but he allows him to stay on board as he has too few people. At the same time, William tells Marianne that he wants to sail around the world. Marianne helps get him into the Navy.

After a few years of service, William returns for a vacation. He makes his love public, which he has for Marianne's sister Marguerite. William has to go again and after a while he reaches China. In a Chinese port he missed his ship after going ashore. When he is drugged and robbed by a girl, he is wanted as a deserter. William comes to and seeks refuge on the Green Dolphin, which is also in the harbor . In New Zealand, he leaves the ship and befriends Timothy. He writes to Octavius to get permission to marry Marguerite. But he accidentally writes Marianne's name. Timothy learns of the mishap and asks William to protect Marianne from the truth, which is painful for her, and to marry her. Marguerite has become depressed because her parents passed away. She went to the monastery to find peace and quiet there.

Years later, Marianne and William settled in New Zealand. An earthquake destroys the village, with Marianne and her unborn baby almost being killed. Years later, William has a daughter, Veronica, and the family has to leave the region because of a war between the settlers and the Maoris. They are returning to St. Pierre after William was also officially pardoned by the Navy. Shortly after her return, Marianne finds a letter that shows her that William was interested in Marguerite. She confronts William, who does not deny, but confesses that she really loves Marianne. Marianne is hurt and confused and tells her sister about Williams Schnitzer. Marguerite assures Marianne that she will forgive William. She found happiness in her destiny as a nun. Marianne pushes aside all doubts and returns to her husband.

Reviews

For the lexicon of international film , Taifun was "a largely unsentimental, but very tiring film, which at best will be remembered for the impressive depiction of an earthquake catastrophe".

Bosley Crowther of the New York Times described the film as a jumble of windy emotional episodes, heroic adventure, and overwhelming divine power. Variety found that the unrealistic story was of no help in recouping the money the film cost. This requires the help of earthquakes, giant waves and rebellious natives.

Douglas Shearer was also nominated in the Best Sound category. There were further nominations in the categories Best Camera / Black & White and Best Editing .
