Patrick Aherne was married to the comedy actress Renee Houston (1902–1980), they had two biological and two other adopted children. He died of cancer in 1970 at the age of 69.

Aherne took part in around 60 films and several television series between the 1920s and 1950s. Afterwards he mostly played only minor supporting roles, first until the mid-1940s in Great Britain, then later in Hollywood after his relocation to the United States. There he played mostly dignified figures such as generals, doctors or aristocrats. He played his last minor role in 1957 as a court usher in the prosecution's witness .
