Douglas Shearer

Douglas Graham Shearer (born November 17, 1899 in Westmount , Canada , † January 5, 1971 in Culver City , California , USA ) was one of the most important sound engineers in the US film industry.

Life

Douglas Shearer, who had studied engineering , came into contact with the technicians at her studio MGM while visiting his sister, Hollywood star Norma Shearer , where he was initially responsible for the technical maintenance of the cameras and projectors.

During the transition from silent films to talkies , he took on responsibility for the newly established sound department, where he quickly became one of the most innovative technicians in the entire industry. Douglas Shearer developed, among other things, a method in which the sound track was copied directly onto the film track, which significantly improved the recording technology.

In his more than 40-year career in film, he won a total of 7 Academy Awards , was nominated 14 times for an Oscar and was constantly involved in the further development of recording technology and microphone use .
