The black pearl (original title: All the Brothers Were Valiant ) is an American adventure film romance by Richard Thorpe from 1953 based on the sea adventure novel All the Brothers Were Valiant . The leading roles are played by Robert Taylor , Stewart Granger and Ann Blyth . The film was nominated at the Academy Awards in 1954 for the Oscar for best camera in a color film.

Brothers Joel and Mark Shore are seafarers. When Mark disappears on a whaling expedition , Joel and his wife Priscilla Holt go in search of his missing brother. To their horror, they find out that Mark has become an unscrupulous stumbled man, and thus a disgrace to his family. Mark not only plays Priscilla, but also stirs up a mutiny on Joel's ship, so that he himself becomes the ship's commander and can sail to the South Pacific in search of a valuable pearl hiding place .

Ben Ames Williams novel All the Brothers Were Valiant , published in 1919, was already released in 1923 by Irvin Willat as a silent film with Malcolm McGregor , Billie Dove and Lon Chaney in the leading roles under the title Sailorless and by William Nigh in Duty and Love ( Across to Singapore , 1928) filmed with Ramón Novarro , Joan Crawford and Ernest Torrence .

The film produced by MGM had its US cinema premiere on November 13, 1953 and shows Lewis Stone, who died on September 12, 1953, as Captain Holt in his last film role. With a budget of 1,816,000 US dollars turned grossed US $ 4.71 million.

At the Academy Awards in 1954, George J. Folsey was nominated for the Oscar for best camera in a color film.
