Richard Thorpe

Richard Thorpe (born February 24, 1896 in Hutchinson , Kansas , † May 1, 1991 in Palm Springs , California ) was an American film director .

Life

Prior to his Hollywood career, Thorpe began directing vaudeville shows and plays. In 1923 he began making films, mainly low-budget comedies and westerns . In the Hollywood studio system of the 1930s he was a popular director of MGM because he always shot his films under the financial budget . As a result, he had the dubious fame that he only shot each scene once, which gave him the derisive nickname “Mr. One Take ”. Although he never made the big break, he made 185 films in a career spanning over 40 years.

His best films are Ivanhoe - The Black Knight and The Prisoner of Zenda , both classic adventure films , although the latter was a 1: 1 remake of the 1937 film by John Cromwell . For this, David O. Selznick , the producer of the Cromwell version, later claimed to have put a Moviola with the 1937 film in his studio and shot it exactly scene by scene. He was never nominated for an Oscar , but he was always a guarantee for solid work and good cinema entertainment. His son Jerry Thorpe also became a well-known film director.
