action

The sisters Patsy and Jean Deyo grow up , so to speak, in the lap of the theater . Even as children they perform together with their parents and even as adult young women they are drawn to the boards that mean the world. They deal with famous artists from an early age and grow into the profession of their own accord. In essence, however, the sisters are very different. Patsy, who is only a year older than her sister, keeps straightening Jean's head when she flirts too much and is too carefree. Jean is determined to marry a rich man one day. Since recently she has been receiving orchids every day from a mysterious admirer who only leaves the abbreviation “someone”. Inside their apartment, the sisters have turned a so-called canteen into a small stage on which they sing and dance for dozens of sailors and soldiers after their performances in the club. The young sailor Johnny Brown also comes and goes there. Nobody knows that he is the millionaire son John Dyckman Brown III. So far he has also been able to keep secret that he is that certain “someone”. He usually comes with a Sergeant Frank Miller. Frank fell in love with both sisters. Patsy, who is very interested in Johnny, finds that he is more interested in her sister.

There is an old warehouse very close to the sisters' apartment that Patsy and Jean would love to convert into a performance venue for their program. Unfortunately, they lack the capital. Surprised, they learn from a Mr. Nizby that “someone” has bought the warehouse for them and is even planning to pay the renovation costs. As they inspect the house, they meet an old colleague named Billy Kipp, who lives there secretly after his wife left him with his son years ago. The building will be completely overhauled and furnished according to Patsy and Jeans wishes. When everything is ready, the sisters appear in a lively show, which of course also includes Johnny and Frank. The evening will be a great success. Patsy admits her feelings for Johnny, but refuses to give in, because she thinks he is the right man for her sister. That night Patsy dreams restlessly that she is being courted by Johnny, but ultimately loses him to Jean. The next morning, Billy overhears a bill for Mr. Nizby's "canteen" being forwarded to John Dyckman Brown. Now he knows who is hiding behind "someone" and rushes to Patsy and Jean to enlighten them. Jean is thrilled that her boyfriend "Somebody" is a famous millionaire, but Patsy visits the Browns mansion, where she comes across the elder John Dyckman Brown and then his middle son, John Dyckman Brown II, to reproach them that they would play with their sister's feelings. She learns from the gentlemen that there is still a John Dyckman Brown III and that is "her" Johnny. Patsy is devastated but pretends that she is happy for her sister. After she leaves, Johnny confesses to his father and grandfather that he actually loves Patsy but is afraid of hurting Jean. Patsy has packed her suitcase and just wants to leave. This makes Jean realize how much her sister loves John.

Billy, who represents Patsy on stage, can celebrate a great success, which is very good for his self-esteem. In the meantime, the older gentlemen Dyckman Brown have arrived and grandfather Dyckmann Brown manages to persuade Patsy to make one last appearance. Meanwhile, Jean has made sure that Frank loves her and told him that she, too, reciprocates his feelings. She happily tells her sister that. Later, Patsy and John speak out and confess their love. And Billy Kipp reunites with his long-lost son.

Reviews

The lexicon of international film came to the conclusion: “Revue film from the time of the soldiers' care; the inconsequential plot is enhanced by successful dance and music interludes. "

Variety Staff ruled that it was a "weak story with a thin plot" that would be pepped up with "music numbers by Harry James and Xavier Cugat and their soloists as well as Jimmy Durante and Lena Horne and the concert pianist José Iturbi", but to long. June Allyson, "despite the poverty of the script, performed very well, as did Van Johnson."

Bosley Crowther of the New York Times found the film “joy and enjoyment, because under Joe Pasternak's authority it magically develops charm and a refreshing exuberance.” […] “It is a two-hour package that never gets bored let. Sizzling humor and music are popular and the film is worn by young and old actors who love their work. ”The performances of June Allyson and Gloria DeHaven, whose dancing and singing are“ divine ”, are particularly emphasized. Van Johnson, Tom Drake, Henry Stephenson, Ben Blue and Frank Sully are also "very amusing" in their roles. Harry James and his trumpet are also praised and the song "Young Man With a Horn" sung by June Allyson. Finally, Jimmy Durante is highlighted, who “makes an appearance in this film that is classy, smart and wistful at the same time. He is a constant source of strength and the warmth of his personality fills the entire film and makes it glow. "
