Carlos Ramírez (singer)

Carlos Julio Ramirez (born August 4, 1916 in Tocaima , † December 12, 1986 in Miami ) was a Colombian singer (baritone) and actor.

Ramírez earned money in his youth as a singer on river boats on the Rio Magdalena . There he was discovered by the politician Laureano Gómez , who enabled him to study with Emilio Murillo in Bogotá. 1928 debuted in La Voz de la Víctor , one of the first broadcasters in Colombia. There he met Efraín Orozco , who hired him for a tour of South America. In Buenos Aires he met the conductor André Kostelanetz and his wife, the singer Lily Pons . This gave him appearances in the Café Maipó and the Radio Municipal .

He acted in various films; his appearance in Die Badende Venus ( Bathing Beauty ) on the side of Esther Williams became famous . In 1952 he made his first recordings of Colombian songs, including Bésame morenita , El camino del café , La carta , Compadre, no me hable de ella , Sombras , Arrunchaditos and El Trapiche . He became a successful and well-paid singer, but later lived impoverished in Miami because of his gambling addiction. His last recordings were made in 1972 with the support of the composer Blas Emilio Atehortúa .
