George E. Stoll

George "Georgie" Martin (E.) Stoll (born May 7, 1902 in Minneapolis , Minnesota , † January 17, 1985 in Monterey , California ) was an American film composer and musical director for over 90 films and won the 1946 Academy Awards the Oscar for best score in the movie Vacation in Hollywood .

Life

Stoll began his career as a film composer and musical director in the Hollywood film industry in 1935 as the composer of the film title "I Wished On The Moon" for the film The Big Broadcast of 1936 . For the next thirty years he worked as a songwriter, musical director and film composer on the score for over 90 films.

1940 was nominated together with Roger Edens for the first time for an Oscar for the best film music and that for Music is our world (1939). At the Academy Awards in 1941 he and Edens were nominated twice: on the one hand for the Oscar for the best song for "Our Love Affair" from the film Hot Rhythms in Chicago (1940), on the other hand for the best music in this film. Another Oscar nomination with Edens followed in 1943 for music in the film For Me and My Gal (1942). He got his first sole nomination at the Academy Awards in 1945 for the music in the musical film Meet Me in St. Louis (1944).

In 1946 he finally won the Oscar for best film music for the film Vacation in Hollywood (1945).

Together with Percy Faith , he was nominated for an Oscar in 1956 for best film music in the musical film Tyrannical Love (1955). At the Academy Awards in 1957 he was nominated together with Johnny Green for another Oscar for best music in a music film, namely for Viva Las Vegas ( Meet Me in Las Vegas , 1956), before he was nominated for an Oscar for the last time in 1963 , namely for the music in the movie Play With Me ( Billy Rose's Jumbo , 1962).

His Oscar was bought by actor Kevin Spacey for US $ 156,875 at an auction in Los Angeles on September 10, 2001 , and subsequently donated by him to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
