action

Every year a big festival for the local fishermen is held in a small village in Louisiana . This year the opera diva Suzette Micheline and the opera director Jacques Riboudeaux will be guests of honor. Suzette meets the handsome Pepe Duvalle here. Pepe is the nephew of the fisherman Nicky Duvalle. When Pepe interrupts her at Suzette's gala performance, Suzette is very angry. Pepe turns her solo performance into a duet, which in turn impresses the opera director Jacques very much. He is enthusiastic about the tenor's voice and invites him to the opera in New Orleans . However, Pepe is initially not interested. Only when Pepes uncle Nicky's ship is completely destroyed in a storm does he decide to accept the offer. Hoping to earn the money to buy a new boat, he travels to New Orleans with his uncle.

Opera director Jacques now wants to prepare Pepe for his career as an opera star. Suzette is supposed to soften the rude country boy. Oscar is supposed to teach him sociable behavior. Finally, he introduces Pepe to the conductor Maestro Trellini, who is enthusiastic about Pepe's voice and offers to train him further. Pepe learns quickly and falls in love with Suzette. However, Suzette fears entering into a relationship with Pepe as she would have to break up with Jacques and this would likely damage her own career. So she asks Jacques to marry her. Pepe then wants to leave New Orleans again.

Uncle Nicky is now very bored of New Orleans and wants to go back to his fishing village. When Pepe's friends Tina and Pierre come to New Orleans, they realize that Pepe is no longer the happy boy he used to be, but has become cold and urban. Jacques has now also realized that Suzette doesn't love him, but Pepe. However, Suzette had fallen in love with the fisherman Pepe and can no longer do much with the new Pepe she had trained. When Pepe's friends Tina and Pierre leave New Orleans, Pepe also realizes his personality change. At a performance of Madame Butterfly he is as natural as before and Suzette falls in love with him again.
