Richard Hagemann (born July 9, 1882 in Leeuwarden , Netherlands , † March 6, 1966 in Beverly Hills , California , USA ) was a Dutch, later American concert pianist , conductor , film composer and actor .

Life

Richard Hagemann was born into a family of musicians as the son of the conductor and musical director Moritz Leonhard Hagemann (1829–1900). He himself began his musical career as a concert pianist, later also as a conductor at the Amsterdam Opera House . In 1906 he moved to the United States of America. At the Metropolitan Opera of New York , he conducted the local orchestra, and later several symphony orchestras. Since the late 1930s he worked as a film composer in Hollywood . His best-known works in the film genre were the film scores for several western classics by director John Ford , including his collaboration on the film score for Ringo , which won an Oscar . Further John Ford westerns with compositions by Hagemann were Up to the Last Man (1948), Traces in the Sand (1948), Der Teufelshauptmann (1949) and Westlich St. Louis (1950). In films such as The Fisherman of Louisiana and The Great Caruso , he can also be seen as an actor in larger roles alongside Mario Lanza .
