Footprints in the sand (original title: 3 Godfathers ) is an American western by director John Ford from 1948 based on a story by Peter B. Kyne . The leading roles are cast with John Wayne , Pedro Armendáriz and Harry Carey junior .

action

The cattle thieves Robert, Pedro and William come to the small town of Welcome, Arizona to rob the bank there, but the robbery fails, William is shot and the three of them flee into the desert. They try to escape their pursuers, but unfortunately for them the marshal of Welcome, Buck Sweet, shot their water hose in pieces while they escaped and, anticipating their tactics, posted people at the nearest water points. When they want to look for another watering hole in the desert, they find it destroyed by the deed of a reckless city dweller and are standing near a covered wagon in which his heavily pregnant wife, the sheriff's niece, is. The three help her give birth to the child. The woman is near death and the men promise to care for the child until it is grown up. Out of gratitude, she names her child after her helpers, Robert William Pedro, and makes the three men his godparents. Shortly afterwards she dies.

Because they can no longer obtain water to take care of themselves and the baby, and because of the persecutors behind their necks, the three of them, inspired by a Bible found in their dead mother's luggage, decide to take the baby through the desert to the town of New Jerusalem. But on the way the wounded William dies of exhaustion and Pedro commits suicide with Robert's revolver in order not to have to suffer after breaking his leg in a fall. In delirium, Robert manages to get himself and the baby to the city of New Jerusalem, where he stumbles half dead into a saloon on Christmas Eve.

Meanwhile, the marshal discovered the covered wagon and suspected that the bank robbers had killed his niece. He manages to catch up with Robert in New Jerusalem, but thanks to his rescue operation Robert is soon celebrated as a hero in Welcome. Since he steadfastly refuses to leave his godchild to his uncle, the Marshall, forever and thereby break the promise made to the mother of the child, he is sentenced by the jury to the lowest possible sentence of one year and one day in prison and the entire sentence Farewell to the city as a dear friend on the way to the train station.

background

John Ford had already filmed the story in 1919 as a silent film under the title Marked Man . Harry Carey , the father of the actor who played William in the 1948 version, played one of the main roles . In 1936 the story was filmed under the same original title by Richard Boleslawski , the alternative title was Hell's Heros (German title: Helden aus der Hölle ).

The male baby that John Wayne puts cream on in one scene is portrayed by a girl.

John Ford had to resort to a trick to make the scene of Deputy Curley pulling a mule out of the train work. The animal was extremely stubborn and could not be moved from the place. Ford had the tracks manipulated so that the car could move sideways. Whenever the actor pulled the animal forwards (out of the side door), the wagon was pushed backwards.

The film served partially as a template for Satoshi Kon's animated film Tokyo Godfathers .

Reviews

The Motion Picture Guide wrote at the time that the film was a “wonderful, heartfelt Western about a 'bad guy' who is 'redeemed' through love and willingness to make sacrifices”. "A rather embarrassing, if in its naivety amusing little film," said Thomas Jeier in Der Western-Film .

The film-dienst described the film as a “Western told with a lot of self-irony, whose landscape shots create atmosphere, whose tongue-in-cheek connection with the biblical Christmas story does not always succeed”. For the evangelical film observer , too , there were traces in the sand “[e] in a typical American product that artfully brings the Wild West milieu into the picture, but cannot convince in its religious allusions”.
